I literally grew up with MJ's solo music... listened to "Thriller" before school every morning... fought the peer pressure to listen to Guns 'n Roses etc. and listened to "Bad" instead... "Dangerous" in middle school. Like many casual fans, I let MJ's music fade in my mind as he became so reclusive and had such bad press, etc. Also like many of us, his death re-ignited my interest... and, like many of us, I rediscovered the genius of the music and of the man. All of that said, I enjoyed a ticket to "Immortal" as a gift to accompany a REAL fan (thanks, Mom!) and I loved the way they refreshed the music and the moments built into each of these songs. As a whole, I think the album is tremendous, taking the essence of many of his huge songs and mixing them around a bit, although not nearly as drastically as George Martin et. al. did for The Beatles' "Love" album for that Cirque du Soleil production. Truthfully, this plays a bit more like a greatest hits album, albeit with some cuts you may not find on a greatest hits album. But it's also interspersed with sound bites and effects, yet is very listenable even if I had not seen the show, as opposed to many "soundtracks". I think purists and "real fans" will enjoy this album as a creative endeavor that warrants the purchase, yet does not destroy the original music. I think casual fans will love the moments this album presents in a fresh way that may be more interesting and fulfilling than, say, popping in "Essentials" or another compilation album. Definitely worth a listen and a purchase; if the two-disc album is steep for you, check out the 1-disc, although I can't comment on it. Also note, if you're looking at this in a real-life store as opposed to online, the outer sleeve of this album has an incomplete track listing! Give it a shot!
