Polish-born Basia Trzetrzelewska first gained international fame as a member of the trio Matt Bianco. In 1986, she and partner Danny White left that group so that Basia could begin her solo career. Her first album, Time And Tide, was released on the CBS-distributed Portrait label (original home to Cyndi Lauper, Sade, and briefly, in the States, Ringo Starr (Bad Boy)) in the U.K. in 1987, and later released on Epic in the U.S. after Portrait folded. It was a big success, particularly with Smooth Jazz listeners.Although Basia has recorded good material throughout her career, I always considered TIME AND TIDE to be her masterwork. In 2013, the U.K.-based Cherry Pop imprint released a two-CD deluxe edition of this great work. Not only does it have far better sound quality than the Epic edition, it also is chock full of bonus cuts, including the tracks "Give Me That" and "Forgive And Forget," originally released as non-LP singles. "Forgive And Forget" appeared on the U.K. version of TIME AND TIDE, while "Give Me That" appeared on the Japanese version. Both tracks were unissued in the U.S. until 1991's Brave New Hope EP, which was originally released in 1990 as a CD-5 without those two songs. There are also lots of remixes, some of which have not been issued on CD, others on BRAVE NEW HOPE and compilations such as Basia: The Best Remixes. I enjoyed most of the remixes and instrumentals, except for the Justin Strauss remixes of "Promises," which, except for the Samba House Remix, I found very annoying. The CD booklet features lyrics to all of the songs on the original U.K. album, including "Forgive And Forget" (the booklet with the Epic release did not have any lyrics), plus track-by-track annotations from Basia and Danny White, a couple of retrospective essays, and a complete discography.I highly recommend this release for all Basia fans. Throw your Epic CD in the trash; this is the version to own. Five stars. Thanks, Cherry Pop!
