Breather Resist took a real leap away from their "Only in the Morning" EP with this release. Where "Only in the Morning" would have you pumping your fist,"Charmer" nails you to your seat with its raw emotional fury. The album is incredibly cohesive, with each song sounding like a piece of a bigger picture, and it works amazingly well in the context of an album as atmospheric as this. I wish more bands (hardcore or otherwise) would take a cue from the studio work on this album. So many tricks are used from song to song, without any of it sounding overdone or self-indulgent. If you listen close to the instrumental outro of "An Insomniacs Complexion" you'll hear vocal lines from early in the song played backwards under the mix. While you may not even hear this in your first 20 listens it's an interesting ambient touch. And speaking of ambiance, the the horn/guitar intro to "As Far as Goodbyes Go" is one of the most brilliant things I've heard in a hardcore song period. Finally, as a total non-sequitur, I feel that I would be remiss if I did not mention the Breather Resist bassist. Jesus christ almighty I wish more bassists could lay down a groove like that guy. Thick, punchy, rhythmic lines can be found in every song, and I still marvel at his talent to this day.4.5/5
