You won’t have to do much digging to find the gems on Louise Goffin’s new album, “Songs From The Mine.” From the first track through the last, you’ll find one jewel after another, says my friend Paul Freeman who writes a blog called Pop Music Classics.Since that's so rarely true these days, I was prepared that my hopes for a record I wanted to own entirely was once again going to be a pipe dream, but to my surprise, Paul was right. Louise has been at this her whole life and it shows. Soothing, uplifting, energizing, a truly classic record. Her lyrics are words you want to hang out with, and the songs make you feel like there is hope after a dark storm. There are rock tracks and uptempo songs as well as the more thoughtfully poetic tunes. There's also a sense of humor to her lyrics. Its hard to choose my favorites: Opener "Everybody But You" (classic writing) "Follow My Heart" (usually avoid country sounding songs but this incorporates those influences in the best way possible), "We Belong Together" (killer in the way the best Rolling Stones or Sheryl Crow songs are)"Deep Dark Night of The Soul" (if you like Tom Waits and can appreciate trombones and a woman speaking french in the middle of it), "Here Where You Are Loved" (if you ever did believe in Fleetwood Mac, this reminds me of the best of Buckingham-Nicks), "Main Street Parade" (classic and adorable on ukulele, great lyric), "Some Of Them Will Fool You" (amazing song, beautiful message and delivery) "Good Life" (leaves you feeling you're on your way to living the dream). Everyone should have these mixed in with their daily playlist. At least until she releases another one of her records.
